Guillaume Dufay’s Missa “S’e la face ay pale” is considered to be a compositional hallmark in the history of Western Music. Dufay concieved of the mass as a single musical unit by using the secular song “se la face ay pale” as the cantus firmus line throughout the entire mass. Publishing the mass as a flute consort broadens the literature available to flute ensembles and other like-instrument ensembles. It’s sonorous beauty is irresistible. Ensemble work on the mass presents intonation, blending, and timbral challenges to performers. Needless to say, the mass can be presented in its entirety or in part.
